Angel Di Maria has hammered former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal and says he ‘didn’t give a f*ck’ about the club’s iconic number seven shirt.
Di Maria signed for the Red Devils in a £59.7m deal from Real Madrid in 2014, the Argentina international’s move setting a new British transfer record.
The arrival of the winger was greeted with much excitement, but Di Maria endured a nightmare period in the Premier League and faded rapidly following an initial bright start.
He departed to sign for Paris Saint-Germain after just one disappointing campaign in England and has regularly spoke negatively about his experience at Old Trafford.
Di Maria has now launched an attack on Van Gaal and says the club’s former manager was a major reason behind his struggles, before insisting he did not care about the number seven shirt made famous by club greats including George Best, Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo.
“I didn’t give a f*ck about the Manchester United No. 7, at first they talked to me a lot about it, it was just a shirt,” he told TyC Sports.
“My problem at Manchester was the coach. Van Gaal was the worst of my career. I would score, assist, and the next day he would show me my misplaced passes. He displaced me from one day to the other, he didn’t like players being more than him.”
Di Maria also discussed another former Manchester United manager in Jose Mourinho, who he worked under during then Portuguese’s time in charge of Real Madrid.
The Argentine says he enjoyed a strong relationship with Mourinho, but branded his former boss ‘insane’ and revealing he was prepared to fight ‘with anyone’.
“Mourinho is insane, with me he was always a good guy,” he said. “He fought with anyone though, he didn’t give a f*ck.
“One time he fought with [Cristiano] Ronaldo telling him he didn’t run, that everyone ran for him.”
