Manchester City are reportedly ready to hand Phil Foden a bumper new contract that would see the youngster’s wages quadrupled.
The 21-year-old has been a first-team regular for the club in recent seasons, yet last year felt like a breakout campaign for the academy product, as he went on to net 16 goals in 50 games for the club in all competitions, including bagging nine Premier League goals en route to the title.
That stellar form saw the playmaker included in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad at Euro 2020, going on to feature three times at the tournament before ultimately missing England’s showpiece defeat to Italy due to injury.
That foot injury has kept him out of the opening weeks of the new season, though he is likely to go on to play a key role for Pep Guardiola’s side once again this term on his return to action, with City looking to fend off the competition to retain their title.
According to the Star, the club are set to reward their young starlet with a new extended deal that will see him quadruple his current earnings.
The report outlines how Foden will be offered a new six-year contract that includes a £150,000-a-week wage, with his existing deal seeing him pick up around £40,000-a-week.
That increase will put him on par with some of his more senior colleagues at the club, with City keen to reward the youngster for his fine form in recent years and tie him down to a deal for the long-term.
The champions have already acted this summer to extend the contracts of a number of their first-team stars, with the defensive pairing of John Stones and Ruben Dias both signing new deals, as well as midfield talisman Kevin De Bruyne
Current first-choice stopper Ederson has also committed himself to the club for the foreseeable future, with the report suggesting that fellow ‘keeper Zack Steffen is another in line for an improved contract.
