Klopp ready for ‘tough group’ as Liverpool face Milan in UCL opener

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool have been given a ‘tough group’ in this season’s Champions League but is relishing the return of European nights at Anfield.

Liverpool begin their Champions League campaign with a home clash against AC Milan tomorrow evening, before facing Porto and Spanish champions Atletico Madrid in a difficult European draw.

Tomorrow’s clash is remarkably just the third competitive meeting between the Reds and Milan, with the two previous encounters having been Champions League final clashes in 2005 and 2007 respectively.

Klopp admits his side face a challenge to secure qualification to the knockout stages, but says he is relishing the return of European nights at Anfield following the fans’ return to the terraces this season.

“When we all saw the draw, I don’t think any of us thought it was a great group,” Klopp told his pre-match press conference.

“It is a tough group. Atletico Madrid, wow. Porto, usually the champions in Portugal so a top team, and then AC Milan is one of the biggest teams in Europe, so it is proper Champions League.

“It is all about getting enough points to get through that group and we better not waste time, starting tomorrow.

“It was a long time ago when we had a Champions League game at home.

“We have spoken a lot about European nights at Anfield and I cannot wait to experience it again.”
