Tottenham can sack Nuno Espirito Santo mid-way through the manager’s two-year contract, should the north London side fail to secure a top-six finish in the Premier League this season.
The Portuguese coach has come under mounting criticism in recent weeks following a run of three consecutive league defeats, though a 2-1 victory against Aston Villa on Sunday has eased some of the growing pressure heading into the international break.
The Athletic have revealed the presence of a ‘win-win’ insurance clause inserted into Nuno’s contract upon his appointment this summer, however, allowing Spurs to dismiss the former Wolves boss at the end of his debut campaign, should he fall short of their expectations.
Daniel Levy can sack Nuno if Spurs fail to finish in the top six this season, without the need to pay compensation to the 47-year-old for the remainder of his contract.
Nuno’s appointment came after a series of failings in the club’s recruitment of a new head coach, the search for a successor to Jose Mourinho seeing Spurs fail in several approaches for potential replacements.
Spurs will hope Nuno can overcome the difficulties of his early reign and win over the supporters, however, who have been sceptical of the club’s playing style during the early period of the Premier League season.
Spurs, however, remain just four points off league leaders Chelsea and the hope will be that Levy’s clause will not need to be activated.
