Carragher airs his concerns over Salah contract situation at Liverpool

Jamie Carragher has aired his concerns over Mohamed Salah’s contract situation and says Liverpool ‘cannot afford’ to allow the forward’s deal to run down any more.

Salah has entered the final two seasons of his contract at Liverpool and has so far failed to agree terms on an extension, despite the club being keen to secure the future of their leading scorer.

The Egyptian international has started the season in sparkling form and is the Premier League’s joint-leading scorer on six goals, with Salah scoring a stunning individual effort during the Reds’ 2-2 draw against Manchester City on Sunday.

Liverpool have secured new deals for a host of leading figures in recent months and Carragher believes it is vital the Reds ensure Salah’s peak years are continued at Anfield.

“Liverpool cannot afford to let his contract situation drag on, with the threat they could lose him in the next two years,” he said, as per the Mirror.

“I know the situation Liverpool are in. They don’t have the finances of Manchester City. But right now, Salah is playing as well as anyone in the world.

“He is one of the greatest goalscorers this club has ever seen, and it’s imperative that at his peak he’s still scoring goals in the red shirt of Liverpool.”

Salah will turn 30 next summer and Liverpool have been reluctant to hand lucrative long-term contracts to ageing players, but Carragher believes he should be an exception given his professionalism and believes the star has several more seasons at the highest level.

“This is a guy who really looks after himself, and you can see that when he takes his top off when he scores a goal. This lad’s got a lot in him as he goes into his 30s.”
