Phil Foden has agreed terms on a bumper new six-year deal at Manchester City, with the club keen to recognise his increasing importance.
The 21-year-old is set to be rewarded following what’s been a breakout last year or so, having cemented his place in Pep Guardiola’s side and played a pivotal role in the club’s Premier League title triumph last season as well as their surge to the Champions League final.
After overcoming an injury at the start of the current campaign, the England international has quickly made his mark, notably producing a man of the match display in the recent 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield, in which he netted with a classy drilled finish from the angle.
Following that fine showing, the Manchester City academy product has continued that form for his country, putting in a sensational midfield display in the 5-0 win over Andorra at the weekend, with the youngster registering an assist for Bukayo Saka and showcasing his expert range of passing in a deep-lying role.
As per the Times, City are seemingly keen to ensure he remains at the Etihad for the foreseeable future, and have reportedly reached an agreement for a new six-year deal to keep him at the club until 2027.
Foden’s current contract still has just under three years to run, although the report suggests that the champions are keen to hand their star asset an increased wage and a longer deal, as a marker of the progress he has made in recent years.
The new long-term deal will likely see a vast improvement on his current £60,000-a-week contract, ensuring that he is one of the best paid young players in the Premier League.
That seems fitting for a player who scored 16 goals in all competitions last season and was recently included on the 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist, alongside fellow Three Lions stars Harry Kane, Mason Mount and club teammate Raheem Sterling.
While the latter man is yet to agree a new deal, the club have already handed new contracts to a number of their star performers in the last year, with Ruben Dias, John Stones, Fernandinho, Ederson and Kevin De Bruyne all putting pen to paper recently.
