Wayne Rooney is reportedly interested in taking the Newcastle job on a short-term basis – should the Magpies sack under-fire manager Steve Bruce.
Rooney has emerged as a shock candidate to succeed Bruce on a short-term basis as the Magpies new ownership considers managerial change following their billionaire takeover at St James’ Park.
The former England captain is currently in charge of Championship side Derby County, but has won just 13 of his 50 fixtures in charge with the Rams currently in administration and bottom of the second tier.
The Chronicle are reporting that Rooney could walk away from the club given their financial issues and would be interested in helping Newcastle should Bruce be dismissed, and the 35-year-old would look to take first-team coach and former Magpies favourite Shay Given with him to the North East.
Rooney has spoken positively about Newcastle previously, with the Magpies having been interested in signing the forward before his move to Manchester United in 2004.
It remains to be seen whether the new ownership would make a move for Rooney however, given his limited managerial experience and indifferent record at Derby, despite the difficulties he has had to navigate at Pride Park.
