Antonio Conte is ‘open’ to managing Manchester United despite his ‘reservations’ regarding the club’s structure.
Conte has been named a potential successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with the pressure mounting on the Red Devils’ boss, with Sunday’s 5-0 defeat to Liverpool increasing the uncertainty surrounding the Norwegian’s future.
United are without a win in four Premier League fixtures and the manner of their embarrassment at Old Trafford this weekend has led to calls for Solskjaer to be replaced.
Conte has been without a club since leaving Inter Milan during the summer, having ended the Nerazzurri’s 11-year wait for Serie A title success last season.
The Manchester Evening News are reporting that the former Chelsea boss would consider a return to the Premier League as Solskjaer’s replacement, although he does have ‘reservations’ regarding the Red Devils’ structure.
According to the report, Conte – who held talks with Tottenham during the summer – would seek assurances over recruitment and would not accept ‘marketable’ players being forced upon him by the club’s hierarchy.
It remains to be seen whether the United board pull the trigger regarding Solskjaer’s future, or whether Conte would be deemed a suitable replacement despite his past triumphs, winning league titles at Juventus, Chelsea and Inter.
The Italian’s pragmatic style is at odds with United’s ‘idealistic identity’, whilst there could also be reservations over the short nature of his spells at previous clubs.
