Xavi offered Barcelona job as Koeman sacked following latest loss

Xavi is set to be offered the Barcelona job after Ronald Koeman was sacked just hours after the club’s latest loss to Rayo Vallecano.

Barcelona were beaten 1-0 on Wednesday evening to extend their difficult start to the new season, the Catalan side having won just four of their opening 10 league fixtures to sit ninth in La Liga.

Koeman’s departure after 14 months in charge was confirmed following a statement released by the club.

“FC Barcelona has dismissed Ronald Koeman tonight as coach of the first team,” the statement said. “Club president Joan Laporta informed him of the decision after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano.

“Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad this Thursday at the Ciudad Deportiva.

“FC Barcelona wishes to thank him for his service to the club and wishes him all the best in his professional career.”

Goal are reporting that La Blaugrana have moved quickly for a replacement and that former Barcelona midfielder Xavi has been offered the role.

Xavi is currently manager of Qatari side Al Sadd and has enjoyed success during his two seasons in charge, guiding the club to seven trophies including the Qatar Stars League in 2020/21.

The former Spain international has previously spoken on his desire to one day return to Barcelona as manager and could now be tasked with turning around the club’s faltering fortunes.
