Unai Emery insists he has had ‘no offer’ from Newcastle despite speculation linking the Villarreal manager with the vacant role at St James’ Park.
Emery has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Steve Bruce at Newcastle as the Magpies’ new ownership seek the appointment of a marquee manager, with the four-time Europa League winner heading a list of names also including Paulo Fonseca, Eddie Howe, Lucien Favre and Roberto Martinez.
The Spaniard’s proven track-record in Europe and previous Premier League experience at Arsenal have reportedly persuaded the Newcastle hierarchy to firm up their interest, though Emery insists there has been no formal offer from the English side.
Emery refused to comment on whether he would be interested in taking the position, but reiterated his commitment to Villarreal.
“The only thing that is true is that I have been told of their [Newcastle’s] interest and I pretty much don’t have more news than that,” he said following Villarreal’s 2-0 win over Young Boys.
“There is no offer, which in any case would have to come via the club. So there’s no more beyond that [which would make] me say I’m going.”
He added: “I do not open or close the door. I am waiting and I would talk to Fernando [Roig, the Villarreal president] and the club, for whom I have respect. My dedication is where I am.”
