Man Utd play down speculation of agreement with Brendan Rodgers

Manchester United have ‘played down speculation’ that the club have reached an agreement with Brendan Rodgers to become the club’s new manager.

Manchester United are understood to be giving serious consideration to sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following the club’s disappointing derby defeat to Manchester City this weekend, the Red Devils comfortably outclassed after a lethargic performance on home soil against the Premier League champions.

The manner of the defeat and a recent record of six defeats from 12 fixtures has piled the pressure on Solskjaer’s position, with CaughtOffside having claimed that United had reached a ‘verbal agreement’ with Leicester manager Rodgers over succeeding the Norwegian.

However, the Mail are reporting that both United and ‘sources close to Brendan Rodgers’ have ‘played down the speculation’, with no approach having been made for the Foxes’ boss.

Rodgers has won admirers since returning to the Premier League from Celtic in February 2019, guiding Leicester to successive fifth-place finishes and winning the FA Cup during the 2020/21 campaign.

Rodgers’ previous connections to Liverpool would make his appointment a fascinating one, though the arrival of the Northern Irishman would provide United with an identity and direction the club have lacked under Solskjaer.
