Manchester United are claimed to be ‘confident’ about appointing Brendan Rodgers as the club’s next manager due to a release clause in his Leicester contract.
Rodgers is considered a leading target for the Red Devils should a decision to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer be made, the Norwegian’s position under increasing threat following a run of six defeats in just 12 fixtures across all competitions.
Manchester United have so far resisted calls for Solskjaer to be sacked in the wake of the club’s disappointing derby defeat to Manchester City, the humbling home loss coming just weeks after losing 5-0 to Liverpool at Old Trafford.
The Star are reporting that the Red Devils hierarchy would not ‘hesitate’ in activating Rodgers’ release clause should a decision be made, however, with the 48-year-old’s deal at the King Power Stadium understood to contain a clause should a Champions League team make an approach.
Rodgers would be reluctant to leave Leicester after guiding the Foxes to successive fifth-place finishes and the FA Cup last season, though the opportunity to take charge at Old Trafford would likely be too difficult to turn down.
His potential appointment would provide a fascinating narrative given Rodgers’ previous connections to rivals Liverpool, the Northern Irishman having guided the Reds to a runners-up finish during his three-season spell at Anfield.
It has been reported previously that he covets the Manchester City job when Pep Guardiola decides to call it a day at the Etihad.
