Newcastle eye ambitious ‘raid’ for Serie A trio

Newcastle are targeting an ambitious triple ‘raid’ on Italian football as the club’s new ownership prepare to invest in January.

Newcastle have been linked with a host of names since the confirmation of the club’s Saudi-backed takeover last month, a deal which has catapulted the Magpies into the financial elite of world football.

The club’s ownership are now preparing to provide funds for new signings in the winter window and Newcastle are considering an ambitious move to sign a trio of Serie A stars.

According to the Times, Inter Milan duo Marcelo Brozovic and Stefan de Vrij are on the club’s radar for January, alongside a deal for Lazio goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha.

Brozovic is out of contract at the end of the current season and has so far failed to agree terms on a new deal at the San Siro, and Newcastle will be hopeful that the ambition of their project can persuade the Croatia international to leave the Italian champions and move to St James’ Park.

The signing of a centre-back is also a priority with De Vrij a reported transfer target, the Dutchman having also formed part of the Inter side crowned champions under Antonio Conte last season.

Strakosha has also won admirers amongst Newcastle’s recruitment team, with the Albania international having featured against England during November’s World Cup qualifiers.

Newcastle are also considering a deal to bring Aaron Ramsey back to the Premier League from Juventus, though the midfielder’s wages of around £400,000-a-week are a significant obstacle to any potential move.

Whether Newcastle are able to attract players of the calibre of De Vrij and Brozovic is yet to be seen, with the club currently in the Premier League’s bottom three and without a win so far this season, as Eddie Howe prepares to take charge of his first fixture against Brentford this weekend.
