Harry Maguire insists Manchester United’s players need to ‘take responsibility’ for the club’s poor results, following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Solskjaer was sacked following the Red Devils’ 4-1 defeat to Watford on Saturday, a result which leaves United eighth in the Premier League and extended the club’s run to seven defeats from their past 13 fixtures across all competitions.
Michael Carrick has been placed in charge on an interim basis ahead of tomorrow’s crucial clash with Villarreal in the Champions League, as the side look to secure a positive result and edge closer to the competition’s knockout stages.
Maguire – who was shown a red card during the loss to Watford – insists that recent results ‘have not been good enough’ and called on the squad to shoulder the responsibility following the ’emotional’ dismissal of club ‘legend’ Solskjaer.
“The result on Saturday wasn’t good enough. The results recently have not been good enough and unfortunately Ole has paid the price for that. We have to take a big responsibility as well,” Maguire said at a pre-match press conference.
“The players need to take responsibility for everything on the field. We were in this together. The manager has paid the price and we are all so disappointed for that.
“We haven’t been good enough, we know that, we have spoken about that and now we must look forward.
“The manager spoke to us. It was an emotional day. Everyone has a huge amount of respect for what he has done for the club. He remains a legend. He said he will be supporting us and wanting us to win every game of football which obviously shows the values of the man.”
