Valverde and Rangnick among five candidates to be interviewed by Man Utd

Ernesto Valverde and Ralph Rangnick are among a five-man shortlist of interim manager candidates to be interviewed by Manchester United.

United are keen to appoint an interim manager as soon as possible following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last week, the Red Devils seeking an experienced coach to oversee the side until the end of the campaign.

Ernesto Valverde, Ralph Rangnick, Lucien Favre and Rudi Garcia have all held talks over the role, whilst The Mail are reporting that Paulo Fonseca – previously linked with both Tottenham and Newcastle – is under consideration for the position.

United are seeking an interim manager as the club decide on their next permanent appointment, with Mauricio Pochettino the leading candidate for the position despite conflicting reports on whether an official approach has been made for the Paris Saint-Germain boss.

The Manchester Evening News reported yesterday that United have seen an approach knocked by for the Argentine, though the Telegraph say that the Red Devils have only used a third party to discover whether a move for Pochettino is viable at present, though PSG are said to be reluctant to allow him to leave the Parc des Princes mid-season.

Each of the club’s interim candidates boasts experience of managing on the continent, with Valverde having been without a club since leaving Barcelona in 2020, having won two La Liga titles during his time at the Camp Nou.

Rangnick is a hugely respected figure within football and currently working as head of sports and development at Lokomotiv Moscow, after previously managing both RB Leipzig and Schalke.

Former Borussia Dortmund manager Favre, Garcia and Fonseca are all also under consideration as a swift appointment is sought, with Michael Carrick set to continue his spell as caretaker manager ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash with Chelsea.
