Tuchel suggests complacency is costing Chelsea after 3-3 draw with Zenit

Chelsea ended their Champions League group stage campaign with a thrilling 3-3 draw away to Zenith St.Petersburg.

The reigning champions got off to a perfect start after just a minute when Timo Werner got on the end of a flick-on from a corner to tap home from a couple of yards out.

Both sides attacked with intent during an exciting opening period and Zenit would find an equaliser in the 38 minute, Brazilian attacker Claudinho glancing a fine header past Kepa in the Chelsea goal.

Just two minute later and the home side would find themselves ahead, Iranian striker Sardar Azmoun rounding keeper and slotting home into an empty net.

Just after the hour mark, £98 million man Romelu Lukaku would be left with the easy task of firing home from a couple of yards out after being teed up by strike partner Werner.

Chelsea though they had won it in the 83rd minute when Werner showed tidy footwork in the area before hammering a low strike past the keeper.

However, Zenit would hit back again with another finish of real quality, Russian midfielder Magomed Ozdoyev firing a wonderful strike into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Unfortunately for Thomas Tuchel’s side that late equaliser meant they would only finish second in Group H behind Italian giants Juventus and speaking after the game Blues boss Tuchel seemed less than impressed that his side had spurned the chance to top the group.

“We had a very good first 15 minutes and then we stopped doing the things we did in the first 15 minutes,” Tuchel said at his post-match press conference.

“The feeling was we could smile, the feeling was that this is okay what we are doing as we are in charge and we are the better team.

“But we were forgetting why we were the better team, which was because the level of concentration and the level of physical investment was high enough to be the better team.

“Once this drops even 10 per cent, once we start managing results and change our behaviour because of what the score is, we get punished. That happened to us at West Ham and it happened to us today.”

Next up for Chelsea is a home Premier League against Leeds United on Saturday.
