Van der Sar not expecting to replace departing Woodward at Man Utd

Edwin van der Sar has dismissed speculation that he will replace Ed Woodward at Manchester United.

Van der Sar has been linked with succeeding Woodward at Old Trafford, with the club’s executive vice-chairman set to step down from his position at the end of the year.

United are currently assessing candidates to fill the role and Van der Sar has emerged in the frame, the Red Devils’ former goalkeeper currently working as chief executive of Dutch side Ajax.

The 51-year-old has spoken recently on the prospect of returning to the Premier League side, but he does not expect to replace Woodward in the near future and reiterated his commitment to achieving success with Ajax in the coming seasons.

Van der Sar is currently contracted to the Eredivisie champions until 2023 and, whilst admitting his desire for a new challenge in the future, says he remains content with the project in Amsterdam.

“I don’t want to become the Wenger or Ferguson of Ajax,” Van der Sar said, as per the Mirror. “I’m really enjoying working at Ajax but there will come a time I will leave.

“But our ambition hasn’t been achieved just yet. We want Ajax to compete more in Europe.”
