Newcastle willing to pay ‘hefty’ loan fee to land Man Utd wantaway, Anthony Martial

The January transfer window is just around the corner, and it presents Newcastle with the first opportunity to start plashing some of their Saudi Arabian cash.

The Magpies are knee-deep in a relegation mire at the moment, securing just one win from their opening 17 Premier League games, leaving them three points adrift of safety, though having played a game more than Watford.

While their form has been bleak, so has the form of the sides around them, and armed with an almost blank chequebook going into the January transfer market, there’s still plenty of hope on Tyneside that Eddie Howe can turn things around and prevent a third relegation since 2009.

It’s clear for anyone to see that Newcastle need to shore up what is the worst defence in the Premier League – conceding 37 goals to date – however, according to the Sun, that won’t stop them from trying to strengthen up front too, with the club eyeing up an ambitious bid to lure Manchester United forward Anthony Martial to St James’ Park.

The Frenchman, via his agent, has already announced his desire to leave Old Trafford in January after falling down the pecking order at the club, the forward scoring just seven times last season, his lowest return since moving to the Premier League.

The likes of Juventus are also said to be interested in Martial, thought the Sun report says Newcastle would be willing to offer United a ‘hefty’ £6 million fee to take the 26-year-old on loan until the end of the season.

Whether Martial would be willing to swap a place on the United bench for a relegation scrap is yet to be seen.

The report also says Newcastle are eyeing Inter Milan forward, Eden Dzeko.
