Lingard to stay at Man Utd beyond January window

Jesse Lingard is set to stay at Manchester United beyond the January transfer window, with the midfielder keen to fight for his place in Ralf Rangnick’s plans.

Lingard has failed to start a single Premier League fixture so far this season, his eight appearances having all come as a substitute with his minutes limited to cup competitions.

The 29-year-old is out of contract at the end of the campaign and has been linked with a move to Newcastle and West Ham next month, having starred during a loan spell at the latter during the second half of last season.

Lingard scored nine goals in 16 appearances for the Hammers, but he has failed to regain his place with the Red Devils since returning to Old Trafford last summer.

However, The Athletic are reporting that the midfielder will attempt to win favour with new manager Ralf Rangnick, who has been appointed as interim boss until the end of the season. The report also reveals that Newcastle are not interested in a deal at present.

Talks over a new contract failed to materialise and there are currently no plans for further talks between Lingard and United, with the England international free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign sides from January.

Lingard will be keen to secure regular first-team football after once again losing his place in the England squad. He returned from an international exile ahead of Euro 2020 following his performances for West Ham last season, but was omitted from Gareth Southgate’s most recent squad after a lack of minutes in 2021/22.
