Premier League clubs ‘determined’ to complete festive fixtures despite Covid-19 postponements

Premier League clubs are ‘determined’ to complete the festive fixtures despite an increasing number of Covid-19 cases and postponements.

English football’s leading sides staged an online meeting today to discuss the concerns regarding the latest phase of the pandemic, after six of the Premier League’s weekend fixtures were postponed as a result of rising coronavirus cases across the division.

Discussions were held regarding a potential postponement of an entire round of fixtures as the possibility of a Premier League circuit break was suggested, though The Athletic are reporting that the majority of clubs want to continue playing where possible.

The benefits of rescheduling the round of fixtures between December 28-30 was debated, but several clubs argued that an entire round of postponements was ‘too complex and riddled with risk’.

Postponing the season entirely was also an idea floated, but it is understood that no side voted in favour of the proposal.

The Premier League will make a final decision on plans moving forward with an official vote having not taken place, but it is anticipated that the season will continue as planned should health and safety permit fixtures to go ahead.
