Manchester United keen to keep Cavani despite Barcelona speculation

Manchester United are keen to keep Edinson Cavani until the end of the season, despite speculation linking the forward with a January move to Barcelona.

Barcelona are understood to be interested in signing Cavani next month, as the Spanish side seek a replacement for Sergio Aguero following the forward’s diagnosis of an irregular heartbeat and sudden retirement.

Cavani signed a one-year contract extension with the Red Devils last summer, but has made just three starts this season as a result of injury problems and the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus.

The 34-year-old is understood to be open to the prospect of moving to Barcelona next month, though theĀ Mail are reporting that United are keen to retain the services of the Uruguay international until the end of his contract.

United are keen to retain a large squad as Premier League sides deal with the threat of the ongoing pandemic, with the Red Devils having had just seven players available for Saturday’s postponed game with Brighton.

Cavani signed for the club on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain and enjoyed an impressive first season in English football, scoring 17 goals across all competitions.

Barcelona are also interested in signing Ferran Torres from Manchester City, whilst the Catalans have also been linked with a loan move for exiled Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
