Ten Hag ‘leading the race’ for Man United job as Woodward departs

Erik ten Hag is ‘leading the race’ to become Manchester United’s next manager, with Ed Woodward’s final involvement set to be the appointment of a new manager at Old Trafford.

Woodward will step down from his position as executive vice-chairman at the end of the month, though will remain on the football board until the end of the season as he oversees the succession plan involving Richard Arnold.

The Times are reporting that his ‘final act’ could be an influence in the club’s next managerial appointment with Ajax boss Erik ten Hag having emerged as the front runner, the 51-year-old fitting the profile of appointment being sought by the Red Devils’ hierarchy.

Ten Hag has won admirers across Europe for his work at Ajax in recent seasons, winning two Eredivisie titles and turning the Dutch side into a competitive force on the Champions League stage.

His track record of winning trophies, attractive football and faith in young talent are all desired as Manchester United seek their next appointment, with Ralf Rangnick currently in charge until the end of the campaign on an interim basis.

Woodward could now have an influence in the Red Devils’ potential pursuit of Ten Hag, before walking away from a club where has become a much-maligned figure.

The 50-year-old was involved in the controversial deal that saw the Glazer family take ownership of the club, whilst his time in charge has become synonymous with a focus on off-the-pitch financial success and a noticeable decline on it.

He formally announced his plan to resign to co-owner Joel Glazer last April following the fall-out regarding the European Super League proposals.
