Jurgen Klopp has vowed that Liverpool will be ‘as annoying as possible’ in their bid to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title this season.
Liverpool are second in the Premier League at present and can move within three points of the league leaders with a win over Leeds on Wednesday evening, having seen the defending champions stumble with defeat to Tottenham last weekend.
City’s loss to Spurs at the Etihad has reignited the title race and Pep Guardiola said last week that Liverpool remain his side’s biggest challenge when it comes to winning major trophies this season.
“Liverpool. They are our biggest rivals in the last few seasons, they are always there,” Guardiola said.
“They are a pain in the a** all the time. They are a fantastic team.”
Klopp has discussed his side’s hopes of catching Manchester City in the title race and says it is important that Liverpool remain close to the top.
The German believes both teams continue to push each other to new levels and revealed his hope that Liverpool can be ‘as annoying as possible’ in their pursuit of the Premier League.
“For us it’s important that we are close to the top — whoever is at the top — because that obviously shows something is going in the right direction,” Klopp said at his pre-match press conference.
“It’s been going on a while that both teams are able to do some special stuff. We are pushing each other and not only us — don’t forget the other teams: Chelsea, United, Arsenal, Tottenham. There is no chance to get soft because another team will catch you.
“Pep said we are the pain in the lower back.
“That’s a good description. And that’s how it should be. We try to be as annoying as possible until we have a chance to overtake.
“In the decisive moments of the season you have to be close enough. We have to be at our absolute best.”
