Jurgen Klopp has warned Liverpool against complacency ahead of the club’s Champions League return with Inter Milan.
Liverpool welcome the Italian champions to Anfield for the second leg of their last-16 tie on Tuesday evening, with the Reds possessing a 2-0 advantage following a positive first result at the San Siro.
Klopp’s side will be strong favourites to progress to the quarter-finals after winning the away leg, but the German has warned his side must complete the job when Inter arrive on Merseyside tomorrow.
“2-0 is the lead that has been turned over most often in football,” Klopp told his pre-match press conference.
“If you are half-time and two up and you think you are already through, then you are already on the wrong path.
“The result was a lot better than I expected, it is a really tough tie and difficult game to play.”
Inter Milan were the better side for periods of the first clash and created several chances to score, with Klopp reiterating that his side are taking on a team who will be arriving at Anfield with the ambition to win.
“They are a really good team, they don’t come here as tourists. They’ll want to attack the game. Let’s see what we can get from it.”
Liverpool remain in pursuit of four trophies this season, having won the first silverware of the English season with Carabao Cup success last month.
The Reds are also second in the Premier League at present and will face either Nottingham Forest or Huddersfield in the FA Cup quarter-finals, in addition to their return clash with Inter Milan in the Champions League tomorrow.
Klopp says his side is focusing on one game at a time, however, and outlined his belief that the Serie A side were the ‘toughest’ opponents his side could face in the last-16 draw.
“We start with Inter. When we saw the draw, we thought that’s the toughest one we could get.
“For us, it’s normal. I can’t remember a draw where we go ‘that’s do-able’.
“Then the Premier League is the strongest in the world – there’s no easy games. But we enjoy the challenge.”
