Chelsea increased their grip on third place in the Premier League after the Stamford Bridge outfit won 3-1 away against bottom side Norwich today.
The Blues came into the game in crisis mode after it was revealed today that the UK Governments latest round of sanctions – due to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine – froze the assets of club owner Roman Abramovich.
However, despite Chelsea’s off the field issues, the defending European and World Champions quickly hit the ground running and took the lead at Carrow Road after just three minutes. Academy graduate Trevoh Chalobah flicking a header into the bottom corner from a Mason Mount corner.
10 minutes later and Chelsea would drive home their superiority when Mount curled a brilliant finish into the roof of the net from 12 yards out.
Teemu Pukki would give Norwich a lifeline on 68 minutes when he slotted home a penalty after Chalobah handled in the area.
Thomas Tuchel’s side upped the tempo thereafter though and the impressive Havertz killed off the game with a ruthless finish from just inside the box.
Speaking afterward Blues boss Thomas Tuchel was pleased with his sides display – particularly in the first-half.
“The first half was brilliant, no. You have to 2-0 lead, It feels like a 3-0 or 4-0 lead,” Tuchel told Sky Sports.
”Then you give a penalty away and concede and things get complicated. It’s life. I’m happy with the result.”
While Tuchel admitted it had been a tough day for him and players due to off field events he had faith that his squad would produce the goods once they stepped over the white line.
“It would be a lie if I said we I had no doubts but I also had a lot of trust. In difficult circumstances we produced a lot of results and good performances so we can trust in our mentality and the culture in the club. We allowed ourselves to focus on the football.”
