Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool will ‘try everything’ to remain in the Premier League title race ahead of the club’s clash with Brighton this weekend.
Liverpool are second in the Premier League after a run of seven straight league wins, the Reds six points being leaders Manchester City but with a game-in-hand on Pep Guardiola’s side.
Liverpool can increase the pressure on City with a win in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off against Brighton this weekend, with City not in action until a trip to face Crystal Palace on Monday evening.
Klopp insists his side will continue to work hard as the Reds look to catch City and remain in the title race until the end of the campaign.
“From our point, I hope so but don’t know,” he told his pre-match press conference.
“So far the boys did incredibly well and why shouldn’t I think we can’t go on? It’s hard work but the boys are ready. We will try everything, but we cannot call it a title race because we are still behind.
“We try to win football games, but let’s see.”
Klopp discussed the maintaining of high standards within the squad and praised the role models at Liverpool for helping ensure consistency at Anfield.
“I believe in humans and the fact that everyone has a specific amount of self-motivation,” he said. “If you see other guys around you, who have something similar, you realise there is still space for improvement.
“We were lucky in some moments and smart in moments in bringing these boys together and it’s now about role models in the team and who sets the standards.”
The German also discussed this weekend’s opponents, who head into the clash on a run of four straight defeats. That form has derailed what had been a promising first half of the season for the Seagulls, who fought back from two goals down to earn a draw at Anfield in October.
“Brighton are not the best in the world but they are incredibly good,” Klopp said. “We’re not the best in the world but nice words (from Potter). He knows his football and knows he has a big chance to make us struggle.
“They are a really good football team. Graham Potter is an outstanding coach, I really like what he is doing. If you have a look at the players they bring in and how they play, it’s really exciting to watch.”
