Ronaldo and Cavani available for Spurs visit but two Man Utd regulars set to miss out

Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani are available for Manchester United’s clash with Tottenham this weekend, though both Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay are set to miss out.

Ralf Rangnick’s side welcome Spurs to Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday evening, a clash of huge importance to both sides in the race for a top-four finish and Champions League football.

United are set to be boosted by the return of Cristiano Ronaldo, the club’s 15-goal leading scorer having missed last weekend’s derby defeat to Manchester City.

“He resumed for training yesterday. He trained the whole training session and I expect him to train today. I would’ve thought he was available tomorrow,” Rangnick told his pre-match press conference.

“I haven’t asked him if he’s happy at Manchester at this club. He’s fit again, resumed training yesterday and we shall see which formation we will line up with tomorrow.”

Ronaldo has been struggling with a hip flexor injury in recent weeks and was not present for the loss to City at the Etihad last weekend, instead taking an apparently unsanctioned trip to Portugal.

Rangnick refused to discuss Ronaldo’s absence and confirmed the 37-year-old and Edinson Cavani are among his options to take on Spurs tomorrow, the Uruguayan having ruled himself out of the derby.

“It doesn’t make sense to look back on what happened the last six or seven days, what is important is what happens tomorrow. Not to go through all this. He and Edi are both available for tomorrow.”

The German did confirm that Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay are set to miss out, however, with the former having tested positive for Covid-19.

McTominay has a calf issue but could be in contention for Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 second leg with Atletico Madrid.

“Luke Shaw will miss out. Until yesterday, still testing positive for Covid.

“Scotty is a question mark, problems with his calf. Right now it’s more likely he will not be available because if we risk him tomorrow he might be out for the game on Tuesday (against Atletico Madrid). I tend to be careful if it’s a muscular injury.”
