Manchester United are said to be considering demolishing and rebuilding Old Trafford on the same site as one of three options being considered for the club’s stadium redevelopment.
United are assessing multiple proposals for a redevelopment of the ground with the Red Devils keen to ensure their facilities match up with modern football’s best stadiums.
The club’s fans have expressed concerns with the faded facilities at the stadium in recent seasons and hopes are that the Glazer family will invest in a regeneration of Old Trafford.
According to the Mail, a demolition and rebuild on the current Stretford site is the most dramatic proposal, with the other options including a rebuild and extend the South Stand.
Another possibility is to ‘leave the stadium structurally intact but conduct a comprehensive revamp of spectator and corporate areas on all four sides’.
United’s preference would be a phased rebuild in which capacity is not impacted, with the plans potentially raising the number of spectators inside the ground from 74,000 to beyond 80,000 on completion.
United have been in their current stadium for 112 years, though the prospect of an entire rebuild of a new ground is possible. However, finding a temporary home during the construction of a new stadium could prove problematic for a club with the Red Devils’ size of fanbase.
An announcement on stadium plans and the appointment of an architect is expected soon.
