Man City ‘exploring the market’ as they eye midfield reinforcement

Manchester City are ‘exploring the market’ in pursuit of a midfielder this summer, as the club await a decision on Fernandinho’s future at the Etihad.

Pep Guardiola is considering midfield reinforcements at the end of the season, despite wanting Fernandinho to commit his future to the club for another season.

The Brazilian is out of contract this summer and currently assessing whether to sign a one-year extension to his deal, with the veteran set to turn 37 before the end of the Premier League season.

Fernandinho has made just six league starts this season with Rodri having established himself at the base of Guardiola’s midfield, though the Spaniard values the experience of a player who has made 373 appearances and won four Premier League titles since arriving from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013.

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that City are currently assessing the market for potential additions, in the event that Fernandinho decides to call time on his career with the club.

City are also understood to be in the market for a centre-forward and are the frontrunners to secure a deal for Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, though the Premier League champions are set to face strong competition from Real Madrid.
