Arsenal are considering a move for Darwin Nunez as the Gunners focus on the signing of a centre-forward this summer.
Mikel Arteta wants to add a centre-forward to his options during the summer transfer window, with both Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah facing uncertain futures as the duo approach the end of their contracts at the Emirates.
The North Londons made an approach to sign Dusan Vlahovic in January, but saw the Serbian turn down their advances to sign for Juventus from Fiorentina.
The Express are now reporting that Arsenal have placed Benfica forward Nunez on their list of targets for the summer, joining a list of Premier League admirers that includes Newcastle and West Ham.
Nunez – who will face Liverpool in the Champions League’s quarter-finals next month – has scored 20 goals in 22 league appearances for Benfica this season, netting a further four times in Europe.
West Ham had made an approach for the 22-year-old in the January transfer window, but the club’s bid of €45m (£37.43m) plus add ons fell short of Benfica’s valuation, according to Sky Sports.
Arsenal are understood to have held ‘background talks’ with the player’s agent over a potential move with Nunez on a list of targets that also includes Real Sociedad’s Alexander Isak, Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lille’s Canada international Jonathan David.
The Gunners are also monitoring Armando Broja’s impressive loan spell at Southampton from Chelsea, whilst Napoli’s Victor Osimhen is another name of interest to Arteta and his recruitment team.
