Ralf Rangnick has given his thoughts on Manchester United captain Harry Maguire being booed on England duty during the international break.
Maguire has been a target for criticism this season following a poor run of performances for his club side, but found himself on the receiving end of jeers from the England support during Tuesday’s 3-0 win over the Ivory Coast.
Gareth Southgate and several members of the Three Lions squad have since condemned the fans who booed Maguire, and Rangnick has offered his view on the reaction the defender received at Wembley.
Speaking ahead of Manchester United’s clash with Leicester in the Premier League this weekend, the German suggested his players are targeted for criticism due to comparisons to the Red Devils’ past successes.
“I don’t think this is a personal thing, it hasn’t anything to do with Harry himself, we know there are one or two players who have been criticised in the last few months,” Rangnick told his pre-match press conference.
“For example, Fred, a very important player for this team, playing regularly for the team and Brazil. I watched his game and he did well.
“Maybe it’s still got to do with the high expectations around this club and maybe people tend to compare with former players and legends.
“Fred, we can also speak about Scotty [McTominay] and Harry, they are important players and players with the right attitude.”
