Manchester United’s development of Old Trafford is likely to take the stadium’s capacity to 88,000 with the focus on an expansion of the Sir Bobby Charlton stand.
United last week announced plans for a revamp of the club’s stadium with the Red Devils having appointed the same planners who designed the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
According to the Mail, the project will focus on adding an additional 15,000 seats and will cost the club in the region of £200m, with United’s current debt not set to prevent the side from borrowing the funds required for the development.
United have around 100,000 fans on a waiting list for season tickets and have been keen to redevelop and improve Old Trafford, with the ground having fallen behind the facilities at several Premier League rivals.
The expansion will see the ground become the second largest in the UK, with only Wembley boasting a higher capacity.
United confirmed that the club’s fans ‘will be at the heart of the process’ in an announcement last week with a meeting between the consultants and the Manchester United Fans’ Advisory Board set to take place later this month.
There are also further plans to improve the club’s training facilities for the men’s, women’s and academy teams.
