Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola admits he would ‘love’ for Manchester United to take points from title rivals Liverpool as the two teams prepare to meet on Tuesday.
Liverpool take on the Red Devils at Anfield this evening knowing a win will move the club above Manchester City and to the top of the Premier League table.
City return to league action on Wednesday with a clash against Brighton at the Etihad and Guardiola admits he is keen to see his team’s cross-town rivals do City a favour and dent Liverpool’s title hopes.
“I will watch it at home, I want to know the result, would love United to get points but it won’t change if we don’t do our job in the next games. We can learn something about both teams,” he said at his pre-match press conference.
Guardiola’s team face the Seagulls having failed to win in three games across all competitions, with their hopes of a treble ended after an FA Cup semi-final defeat to Liverpool on Saturday.
The Spaniard had come under criticism for fielding a below-strength team at Wembley, but Guardiola insists he has no regrets despite his side’s defeat after listening to the club’s medical teams.
“No regrets,” he said. “I understand the opinions. My selection was for many reasons.
“Kevin (De Bruyne) wasn’t ready, Gundogan wasn’t ready. I understand the questions.
“I was in the hotel in Madrid and in London, I spoke with my doctors and physios. We listen and take the decisions. We have a lot of info you don’t have.
“If we were tired we wouldn’t run in the second half. For many games I ask a lot of my staff for the situations and moods of players. After I take the decisions.”
