Ralf Rangnick has reiterated his belief that a rebuild is ‘necessary’ at Manchester United this summer, following the appointment of Erik ten Hag.
Ten Hag will take charge of the side from next season, having agreed a deal to move to the Premier League from Ajax at the end of the season.
The Dutchman’s arrival is set to kick-start a rebuild of the squad, with Rangnick having been critical of the current players following the 4-0 loss at Liverpool on Tuesday evening.
The interim boss insisted there could be ‘six, seven, maybe ten’ new arrivals at Old Trafford in the summer and has repeated his stance that major changes are required.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of United’s trip to Arsenal, Rangnick said he is prepared to provide Ten Hag with his ‘opinion’ on the current squad with ‘significant change’ expected.
“I mean, it’s obvious there are quite a few players with their contracts expiring,” Rangnick said.
“There might be a few others who – although they have contracts – they are already on loan and still want to be on loan or leave the club.
“It will be a significant change and rebuild necessary, that’s clear, but how many players and which positions, as I’ve said, I’ve not spoken to Erik in person yet. If he asks me my opinion in person, I’m willing to speak to him about my experience, but on the other hand, he’ll also have his own ideas.”
Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic and Edinson Cavani are all expected to leave on free transfers at the end of the season, whilst the likes of Anthony Martial, Dean Henderson and Eric Bailly could move on after falling out of favour this season.
Pogba will miss this weekend’s clash with Arsenal through injury and Rangnick believes the midfielder could have played his last game for the club.
“The doctor said it will take four weeks minimum for him to recover,” he added on the Frenchman.
“The last game is the end of May. I don’t think that it is very likely that he will be able to play again.”
