Ralf Rangnick believes Manchester United are still an attractive proposition for potential transfer targets but says the club must be ‘realistic’.
It has been an utterly woeful season for Manchester United, with Thursday Night’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea leaving them sixth in the Premier League on just 55 points with three games to go, with Champions League football all but certain to be out of reach.
The Red Devils have appointed Erik Ten Hag as their next permanent manger ahead of next season, though, with a number of players expected to leave on a free transfer, and even more expected to be moved on, it is shaping up as a vital and pivotal moment in the club’s recent history.
The 2022/23 season will mark 10 years since the club last lifted the Premier League trophy, with English football having been dominated by Liverpool and Manchester City in the most recent years.
Ralf Rangnick has recently said that Manchester United could need to sign up to 10 players this summer, though the German said the club will have to be ‘realistic’ of their chances of landing top talents if they are bidding against the likes of Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea.
“As a club, with regards to supporters, stadium and quality of training ground, it definitely is [attractive],” he told a press conference. “But we also have to be realistic. As soon as other clubs like Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City are involved, you need some good reasons and somebody has to explain to the players. That is why it is also important what Erik [ten Hag] thinks.
“It is about speaking to those players to find out about their mentality and character. Are they really players who are the best possible fit for the club?”
United take on Brentford on Monday evening in a fixture that matters little to either side.
