Guardiola coy on talk of Haaland arrival

Pep Guardiola was coy on talk of Erling Haaland’s impending arrival at Manchester City but says ‘new players’ can help his side become a ‘stronger team’ next season.

City are understood to be on the verge of completing a deal to sign Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, with the Premier League champions set to activate the €75m release clause in the forward’s contract.

Haaland’s arrival will end City’s pursuit of a centre-forward, having operated for much of the past two campaigns without a recognised number nine.

The Norway international has emerged as one of the most sought-after players in world football after scoring 85 goals in just 88 appearances for Borussia Dortmund in all competitions.

However, Guardiola insists one player can not be the solution to his side’s ‘problems’ despite the excitement that has greeted news of Haaland’s impending arrival.

“We have a number nine now,” Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference ahead of City’s clash with Wolves.

“We have I guess new players in the squad, some from the academy come up next season. New players always helps to be a stronger team. But not one defender or striker will solve our defensive or scoring problems.

“Not me, the club always has to have a vision for the future. The decisions the club makes I am aware and supportive 100%.”

Guardiola refused to speak further on a deal for Haaland, but suggested the transfer is close to completion following reports of a passed medical this week.

“Everybody knows the situation, I shouldn’t talk because I don’t like to talk about the future or next season. Dortmund and Man City told me I’m not allowed to say anything until it’s completely done. We’ll have time to talk.”
