Pep Guardiola says Manchester City’s clash with Wolves is ‘massive’ for his side as the club look to move another step closer to the Premier League title.
City moved three points clear of Liverpool with a 5-0 win over Newcastle on Sunday, capitalising on dropped points from the Reds against Tottenham the previous day to move clear at the top of the division.
Guardiola is expecting Liverpool to challenge his side across the final fixtures of the campaign and insists Wednesday evening’s trip to face Wolves at Molineux represents a ‘final’ for the defending champions.
“It’s going to happen, hopefully we can do it,” Guardiola told his pre-match press conference on Liverpool’s challenge.
“It happened the last four or five years. Both teams have done another impressive season. We know what we have to do, we will try to be there. Tomorrow is a final for us, an opportunity to arrive in the last game here with the title in our hands. It’s massive for us.”
Wolves are eighth in the Premier League this season and fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Chelsea last weekend.
Guardiola is anticipating a tough test against Bruno Lage’s side and outlined the threat he believes Wolves will pose his team.
“It’s not about the last result at Stamford Bridge. In the Premier League, the facts are here, for many reasons. The transitions with Dendoncker, the counter play, the personality, the back five many years playing this system.
“The games they win, we know how good the team is. Hopefully we recover well from this last week and we can do a good game. This is the most important thing in our heads.”
