Man City to rival United’s interest in Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips

Manchester City are ready to rival Manchester United’s interest in Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Phillips has emerged as a potential transfer target for the Premier League champions who are in need of midfield additions this summer, with club captain Fernandinho set to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Ilkay Gundogan’s future is also in doubt with reports this week having suggested the Germany international has been granted permission to move on, a situation that could lead to an approach for Phillips.

The Mirror are reporting that City have sent scouts to monitor Phillips’ progress this season and view the England international as an attainable option this summer. The 26-year-old will almost certainly move on should Leeds be relegated from the Premier League this season, with Jesse Marsch’s side just one point above the bottom three at present.

Aston Villa and West Ham have expressed an interest in signing Phillips, who was named as England’s Player of the Year in 2021 after his role in the Three Lions’ run to the final of the delayed European Championship.

Phillips is believed to have ruled out a potential move to Manchester United despite interest from Old Trafford, given the rivalry between the Red Devils and Leeds.

The midfielder came through the academy ranks at Elland Road and has made 233 appearances in all competitions for the club.
