Chelsea are looking into adding a former player to the club’s board following the completion of the takeover by Todd Boehly.
The American-based consortium fronted by LA Dodgers co-owner Boehly completed their £4.25bn takeover of the west Londoners on Monday and plans are now underway to restructure the hierarchy as a new era begins.
Among the proposals being considered is the appointment of a former Chelsea player to the Blues’ board, with the Mail reporting that Boehly will utilise the experience of director Marina Granovskaia and chairman Bruce Buck in the immediate future.
Both were influential figures during Roman Abramovich’s tenure as Chelsea owner and will remain for now, though there is uncertainty over whether both will remain in the longer term.
Former players as board members have been popular appointments across a number of Europe’s leading clubs, with Edwin van der Sar the current chief executive at Ajax.
In the Premier League, Arsenal currently have ex-midfielder Edu working as technical director, whilst Chelsea themselves appointed former goalkeeper Petr Cech as technical and performance advisor in 2019.
Boehly will be joined among the club’s new hierarchy by business partner Mark Walter, Clearlake co-founder Behdad Eghbali and Swiss businessman Hansjorg Wyss. He will also have fan representation on the board as the new ownership’s reign begins.
