Man Utd ‘fear’ Barcelona stance over De Jong pursuit

Manchester United remain in talks with Barcelona over a deal to sign Frenkie de Jong, but ‘fear’ the Spanish side are increasing their valuation in order to solve their financial issues.

De Jong has emerged as a leading transfer target for the Red Devils with the midfielder having excelled under the guidance of Erik ten Hag at Ajax.

Barcelona are open to the departure of the 25-year-old as the Catalan club look to raise funds, though ESPN are reporting that United have been frustrated with the Spanish side’s stance during initial negotiations.

United are understood to have warned Barcelona that the club are not prepared to offer a huge fee and believe the La Liga side’s active attempt to sell De Jong should be reflected in their valuation.

The Dutch international had initially been reluctant to leave for a side not in the Champions League, though that stance is said to have ‘softened’ with De Jong open to a move to Old Trafford and a potential reunion with Ten Hag.

The signing of a midfielder is the primary focus for the Red Devils recruitment team with the exits of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Jesse Lingard having weakened the strength in depth.

De Jong remains the club’s lead target, though alternatives have been identified should a deal not be agreed with Barcelona. United are also in the market for additions at centre-forward and centre-back.
