Manchester United have made an offer to sign Christian Eriksen, with the midfielder available on a free transfer.
Eriksen will become a free agent once his short-term contract at Brentford expires on June 30 and has been weighing up his options following a remarkable return to football this season.
The Denmark international signed a six-month deal with the Bees in January and starred during a strong second half of the season for Thomas Frank’s side, his creative influence helping Brentford to seven wins from 11 games and comfortable Premier League survival.
Brentford had signed Eriksen as a free agent following his departure from Inter Milan, with the 30-year-old released from his contract due to Serie A rules preventing players from competing with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators.
Eriksen was fitted with the heart-starting device following his collapse whilst playing for Denmark at Euro 2020 last summer, but has shone since returning to the sport and the Premier League.
The Athletic are reporting that United have now made an offer to sign Eriksen ahead of next season as Erik ten Hag looks to add to his midfield options.
The departures of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata have weakened the side in midfield and Eriksen could add experience and quality to the club’s creative options.
Brentford are keen for Eriksen to sign an extension in west London, though the midfielder spoke of his desire to play Champions League football last month.
Speaking to Viaplay, the Dane said: “I have different offers and options, which we are considering, and then we make a decision.
“I would love to play Champions League football again. I know how much fun it is, but it isn’t essential for me.”
Former club Tottenham have also been linked with bringing Eriksen back to the club and the North Londoners could provide the platform of Champions League football, having secured a top four finish ahead of United last season.
