Last season’s title race went down to the wire with Manchester City crowned champions in thrilling fashion on the final day, but attentions have already turned to the 2022/23 campaign.
City will be hoping to retain their title as the season kicks off in August, though could the defending champions be faced with an improved challenge from rival sides?

The immediate focus for the Red Devils will be securing a top four finish and return to Champions League football.
Tottenham – 16/1
There’s optimism at Tottenham following the club’s turnaround under Antonio Conte last season, with the Italian arriving in November to guide a struggling side into the Champions League.
Conte boasts one of the most successful coaching résumés in European football, having won league titles in five of his last seven full seasons as a manager, across two different divisions and with three separate clubs.

The 52-year-old has made no secret of his desire for Spurs to match his own trophy-winning ambitions and the early signs from the transfer window are that the board are prepared to back the boss.
Fraser Forster and Ivan Perisic have arrived on free transfers to add depth in key areas, whilst the North Londoners have also agreed a deal to sign Yves Bissouma from Brighton.
There remains a huge gap to bridge to the Premier League’s top two, but further additions are expected this summer and Conte’s proven track-record can ensure Spurs move closer to the top of the division.
Chelsea – 16/1
Chelsea can begin to look forward after the uncertainty surrounding the club’s future, with the takeover led by Todd Boehly ushering in a new era at Stamford Bridge.
Thomas Tuchel will now look to improve a squad who fell short in their bid to mount a title challenge last season, finishing 19 points behind eventual champions Manchester City.

The arrival of Romelu Lukaku failed to work out as hoped as the Belgium international struggled to find his feet at Chelsea, with the deal having been widely viewed as one that could turn the Blues from contenders into champions before a ball had been kicked.
Solving those attacking issues – alongside sourcing the right replacements for departed defensive duo Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger – will be key to Chelsea’s hopes.
Liverpool – 2/1
For the second time in just four seasons Liverpool missed out on the title by a single point, evidence of the fine margins that can decide the outcome of the Premier League.
Jurgen Klopp’s team will no doubt look back on costly draws with the likes of Brighton, Brentford and Chelsea with regret, as the Reds look to regroup and challenge once again in 2022/23.
What had been an attempt to win an unprecedented quadruple ended with a domestic cup double, missing out on both the Premier League and Champions League in agonising fashion.

Klopp will hope his team can bounce back in another assault on the major trophies next season and work has began to improve and evolve his side as Liverpool close in on the signing of Darwin Nunez from Benfica, in a deal which could reach a club record £85m.
Nunez scored 34 goals last season and will provide an out-and-out number nine option for the Reds, but will last season’s runners-up come to regret the exit of Sadio Mane as the forward edges closer to a move to Bayern Munich?

Manchester City are the odds-on favourites to retain their title and secure a fifth coronation in just six seasons, with the defending champions once again the team to beat in 2022/23.
Erling Haaland’s arrival from Borussia Dortmund has made the challenge facing opposition sides even more daunting, with the Norway international arriving with a record of 86 goals from 89 games for the Bundesliga side.

Adding one of world football’s best centre-forwards into a side that creates chances at will looks like a recipe for further success, though it will intrigue how the 21-year-old fits into a side that have operated for much of the past two seasons without a centre-forward.
City are the division’s dominant force right now and rightly favourites for the Premier League again.
