Arteta reacts as Arsenal confirm Zinchenko signing

Arsenal have completed the signing of Oleksandr Zinchenko in a £30 million deal from Manchester City.

The Ukraine international has already teamed up with his new teammates on the club’s pre-season tour of the United States, and has put pen to paper on what has been described as a ‘long-term’ contract.

Zinchenko joined Manchester City from FC Ufa back in 2017 and went on to make 128 appearances for the Citizens, scoring twice and providing 12 assists, while winning four Premier League titles, one FA Cup and one League Cup during his time in Manchester.

The 25-year-old has operated largely as a left-back under Pep Guardiola, though is capable of playing as both a left winger and in central midfield.

Zinchenko worked alongside current Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta during the Spaniard’s time as Guardiola’s assistant, and speaking after the transfer was confirmed, the Gunners manager praised his new signing’s ‘versatility’ and ‘character’.

“We’re so happy Alex has joined us,” Arteta told the official Arsenal website. “He’s a player that I personally know really well and continued to follow him after my time at Manchester City.

“Alex is a high quality player who will give us options and versatility. It’s not only about the positions he can play but as well, the versatility he will give us in attack and defence.

“Alex is a person with great human qualities and character, and I’m delighted that everyone has made this huge effort to bring Alex to the club.”

Zinchenko becomes the second player to make the move from the Etihad to the Emirates this summer, with the Ukrainian following Gabriel Jesus to North London following his £45 million move earlier this month.
