Dean Henderson has criticised Manchester United’s treatment of him last season and has branded the club’s decision not to allow him to leave on loan as ‘criminal’.
Henderson failed to oust David de Gea as the Red Devils’ number one last season and made just three appearances across all competitions.
The 25-year-old had competed for first-choice status in 2020/21 and featured on 26 occasions, but returned to number two status last season.
Henderson has joined Nottingham Forest on loan as he looks for regular minutes this season and the one-cap England international has criticised his parent club’s decision to block a move last summer.
“I turned so many good loans down last summer for that reason [being promised No.1 spot], and they wouldn’t let me go. It was frustrating,” he told talkSPORT.
“To sit there and waste 12 months is criminal really, at my age. I was fuming.”
Henderson says he made a decision to leave on loan this summer before speaking with new manager Erik ten Hag, revealing that he informed the hierarchy that he had no intention of spending another season as back-up at Old Trafford.
“I didn’t really want the manager to see me in training because I knew he’d probably want to keep me.
“I told all the hierarchy: ‘I need to go and play football. I don’t want to be playing second fiddle’.
“And it panned out so I was almost gone before the manager came in.”
