Man City close in on signing new left-back

Manchester City are said to be ‘closing’ in on the signing Sergio Gomez from Anderlecht.

The Premier League champions have been linked with adding a left-sided defender to their ranks all summer, especially after allowing Oleksandr Zinchenko join Arsenal.

The Citizens were strongly linked with a move to sign Marc Cucurella from Brighton, but refused to meet the Seagulls asking price, with the Spaniard eventually going on to join Chelsea in a deal that could reach up to £62 million.

Reports have since said that City have since turned their attentions to Anderlecht left-back Gomez, with the 21-year-old having impressed since joining the Belgian side from Borussia Dortmund last summer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, City are now closing in on reaching a deal for Gomez that will be ‘in excess of €10 million’, with just the ‘final details’ to be discussed.

Romano says that City initially planned to loan him out to Girona – one of the clubs under the City Football Group umbrella – though the Premier League side are now planning to keep him for the season, with Joao Cancelo the club’s only senior option at left-back at present.

The left-back’s debut season with Anderlecht saw Gomez score seven goals and provide 15 assists across all competitions.

Gomez – who shone under the management of former City captain Vincent Kompany at Anderlecht last season – began his career in the academy system at Barcelona and has been capped by Spain up to u21 level.

Should a deal be completed, he will join Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips and Stefan Ortega as new recruits at the Etihad this summer, while Julian Alvarez returned from his loan spell at River Plate having signed for the club in January.
