Manchester United are reportedly set to open contract extension talks with Anthony Martial following his return to prominence under Erik ten Hag.
The Frenchman looked all but certain to be heading for the Old Trafford exit door this summer after a prolonged period of poor form saw him fall down the pecking order.
Martial scored just once in 11 appearances in 2020/21, before featuring just once for the Red Devils in the first half of last season. He was subsequently shipped out on loan to Sevilla in January, but the Spanish side opted against signing him on a permanent basis after he scored just one goal in 12 appearances.
Martial has however rediscovered some form under Erik ten Hag during Manchester United’s pre-season tour in which he scored three times, and made his first appearance of the season in the club’s win over Liverpool last Monday in which he provided the assist for Marcus Rashford’s winner.
According to the Sun, United are set to open talks with the 26-year-old over a new deal, with Erik ten Hag viewing him as having a ‘key role’ in his plans.
Martial has just under two years remaining on his current deal at Old Trafford, with the club keen to ‘protect their investment by avoiding him entering the final season of his contract with nothing sorted’.
Martial missed United’s Saturday lunchtime victory over Southampton with an Achilles injury.
Meanwhile, United have strongly been linked with looking for attacking reinforcements this summer, with the club having seen a €90 million bid rejected for Ajax winger Antony.
The club have also been linked with re-signing former forward, Memphis Depay from Barcelona.
