Report claims Man United have ‘encouragement’ to make one last push for Frenkie de Jong

Manchester United have been given encouragement to make one last push to sign Frenkie de Jong.

United have chased a deal for the Barcelona midfielder throughout the summer and agreed a fee with the Spanish side earlier in the window.

However, De Jong’s desire to remain at Barcelona and complications over unpaid wages that the midfielder is owed by the cash-strapped Catalans prevented a deal being done.

De Jong has started just one of Barcelona’s opening three games of the La Liga campaign and United are hopeful that his lack of minutes could open up the chance to sign the 25-year-old with the World Cup looming in November.

The Express are reporting that the Red Devils have been encouraged to make a renewed attempt by De Jong’s fringe status, with a midfield trio of Pedri, Gavi and Sergio Busquets preferred so far this season.

The Spaniards also have summer signing Franck Kessié and returning loanee Miralem Pjanic among their central midfield options.

United have spent big on the arrivals of Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia and Casemiro this summer, while the club are also pursuing an £84m deal for Ajax winger Antony before Thursday’s transfer deadline. Christian Eriksen has also arrived on a free transfer as Erik ten Hag reshapes his squad at Old Trafford.
