Chelsea in advanced talks to sign €90 million defender

Chelsea are reportedly in advanced talks to sign RB Leipzig defender, Josko Gvardiol.

Chelsea – along with Manchester United and Barcelona – have dominated the column inches during this summer’s transfer window, with the club in need of a number of additions to strengthen a depleted squad in key areas.

The West London outfit saw Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger opt to leave the club on free transfers at the end of last season, meaning defensive additions were always set to be a necessity.

Meanwhile, they have also allowed Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner to leave Stamford Bridge, leaving the club lacking in options up front.

The Blues have already concluded a deal to sign Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli this summer, while have also agreed a deal worth around £70 million for Leicester’s Wesley Fofana who is believed to have had a medical in New York.

That was expected to be the end of the Blues defensive business this summer, though according to Fabrizio Romano, the club are now in ‘advanced talks’ with RB Leipzig to sign RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol.

Romano says that Chelsea have submitted an ‘official proposal’ worth around €90 million (£77m), though says Gvardiol will remain with the Bundesliga outfit for the rest of the season before making the move to the Premier League next summer.

Chelsea had 38-year-old Thiago Silva to thank for their weekend victory over Leicester City, though it appears as though the club could be lining up the 20-year-old as the Brazilian’s long-term replacement.

The Croatian is a highly-rated, modern defender who is hugely comfortable in possession, ranking in the 97th percentile for progressive passes and interceptions, and the 94th percentile for progressive carries.
