Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Liverpool remain in the market for a midfielder, but believes a late arrival is ‘unlikely’ as Thursday’s deadline approaches.
The Reds have been linked with re-entering the transfer market for a new midfielder, following a number of injury issues. Naby Keita, Thiago and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all sidelined at present, while Curtis Jones is also yet to feature in the Premier League this season as he recovers from a calf injury.
Liverpool’s fitness problems have contributed to a disappointing start to the campaign, with Klopp’s side opening the season without a win in three games before Saturday’s record-equalling 9-0 thrashing of Bournemouth.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Newcastle at Anfield, Klopp was asked once again whether Liverpool remain in the market for a new signing in midfield.
“Ish. Yeah, but the closer we get to the last minute, the more unlikely it gets,” Klopp told his pre-match press conference.
“That is how it is. We are not out but it is difficult because a few players are there that would be the right ones, but there are different issues like contracts and clubs that don’t want to sell.
“We cannot force it. We’ll see. There is still time, but when it is over I’ll be happy because then we can stop thinking about it and just focus on the team we have.”
