Messi to make decision on future after World Cup

Lionel Messi will not make a decision on his future at Paris Saint-Germain until after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Messi’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, though PSG are keen to agree a new deal with the Argentina international.

Former club Barcelona are also said to be interested in bringing Messi back to the Camp Nou, though the 35-year-old will not make a decision on his future until after this winter’s World Cup.

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Messi’s focus is on a successful season at PSG and the World Cup with Argentina later this year, with contract talks on hold at the Parc des Princes.

Messi has began the season in superb form for PSG, with three goals and seven assists in seven Ligue 1 appearances. Messi has now provided 17 league assists in 2022, the highest total in a calendar year in his career to date. He has also completed 30 dribbles so far this season, more than any other player across Europe’s top five leagues.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner signed for PSG on a free transfer from Barcelona in 2021, following the financial issues at the Spanish side.

He scored 672 goals in 778 appearances for Barcelona, both of which are club records.
